VAT registration toggle

The VAT-registration toggle tells GarageManager whether your business is a registered SARS VAT vendor. It’s a legal fact, not a feature switch — captured on every plan because it drives how your invoices and exports are coded, even before you start charging VAT.

Set it

  1. Go to Settings → Business & Billing, under Tax (SARS VAT).
  2. Switch on VAT-registered vendor.
  3. Enter your 10-digit SARS VAT number (it starts with 4) — it’s required when registered.
  4. Save.

Registered vs charging VAT

These are two separate switches, and the order matters:

  • VAT-registered — the legal status, on all plans. Drives the Sage Pastel export so each line gets the right SARS VAT201 code.
  • Charge VAT 15% on invoices — the PRO/ENTERPRISE feature that actually adds a VAT line. You can only turn this on once registration is on.
  • Turning registration off automatically turns off charging and clears the VAT number — they’re legally coupled.
Thresholds: in South Africa, VAT registration is mandatory above R1m turnover and voluntary above R50k. If you’re not registered, leave this off — charging VAT without being registered is not allowed.

Once registered and charging, see how VAT shows up in VAT on invoices and feeds the Sage Pastel CSV export.
